Obituary for Mary E. Puffenberger

CIRCLEVILLE, W.VA. – Mary Ellen Whitecotton Puffenberger, 92, died Saturday (November 17, 2018) at the home of her daughter in Circleville. 

Born November 30, 1925 in Bluegrass, Va., she was the daughter of Frank and Alice Fern (Nelson) Whitecotton.  Prior to retirement, she was employed by Genesco.  Mary was a dedicated volunteer for the Churchville Fire Department for many years and was credited for introducing funnel cakes to the annual Churchville firemen’s carnival.  She loved reading – especially her Bible – and crocheting, playing “Carrom” and other family games, and caring for her special little dog, “Princess.”  She attended North Fork Baptist Church. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Elwood “Woody” “Puff” Puffenberger; two sons, Robert Kent Miller and Frankie Eugene Whitecotton; two sisters, Lona Lee Mallow and Fern Julian Fox; and a brother, Roger Dale Whitecotton.  Surviving are a daughter, Camellia Rose Thomas of Circleville; a step daughter, Nancy Lynn Shell of Timberville; a brother, Leo Whitecotton and wife Linda of Swoope; two grandchildren, Sarah Jane Thomas of Circleville and Garrett Benjamin Thomas and his companion Brenda Harrison of Churchville; two step great-granddaughters, Amanda Shell and Kimberly Shell; two great-grandchildren, Cody Reid Wimer and Mary Elaine Dove; one great-great-grandson, Bryson Lee Hedrick; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 21 in the chapel of Bear Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Lester Kennedy.  Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Memory Gardens.  Active pallbearers will be David Hanger, Cecil Leach, Harry Reed, Chad Reed, Cameron Powell, Dylan Dameron and Roger Offenbacker. 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
