Obituary for Garland Gayle Miller

STAUNTON – Garland Gayle Miller, 83, of 309 Ridge Rd., died Thursday (December 27, 2018) in the Shenandoah House of Augusta Health Hospice. 

Born April 21, 1935 in Staunton, he was the son of the late George Miller and Anna Lee (Cox) Miller Clendennen.  Gayle spent much of his youth in the home of his grandparents, William Henry and Cliffie (Proffitt) Cox.  He was a graduate of Churchville High School and was a U. S. Air Force veteran.  He was employed by Westinghouse, and then for many years by Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Detention Center.  After retirement, he worked for several years at Valley Honda.  He was a proud member of Staunton Moose Lodge 1635 where he had attained the status of “Pilgrim.”  He enjoyed organizing teen dance events for the Moose Lodge.  He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed vegetable gardening, hunting, fishing, hiking and cutting firewood.  He loved animals.  As a younger man, was very active in church-league softball.  Gayle was widely known as a prankster and enjoyed sharing jokes with family and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 58 years, Betty (Wimer) Miller; and a nephew, Brian Clendennen.  Surviving are a son, Jeffrey Miller and wife Crystall of Staunton; a sister, Donna Kay Clendennen Harris of Swoope; four grandchildren, Megan Carlen and husband Kevin of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Jessica Clatterbaugh of Lynchburg, Bryan Puffenbarger of Staunton and Andrew Taylor of Staunton; five great-grandchildren, Lucas Smith, Benjamin Clatterbaugh, and Isabel Clatterbaugh, Emma Taylor and Brayden Taylor; and a great-niece, Brooklynn Clendennen. 

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 4 in the chapel of Bear Funeral Home, officiated by Pastors Larry Strickler and Bobby Campbell.  Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Memory Gardens.  Active pallbearers will be Mike Wimer, Steve Balser, Andrew Taylor, Jimmie Cox, Johnnie Cox and Billy Joe Cox.  Honorary pallbearers will be Wilson Randolph, Raymond and Judy Collins, and Pete Martin.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. 

Memorials may be directed to the food pantry of Calvary Baptist Church, 105 Garland Drive, Staunton, VA  24401.
